The fridge is one of the few household appliances that has to be switched on at all times, so it makes sense to try and lower your costs.

The bigger the appliance, the more energy it will use, so it’s cheaper if you go for a smaller fridge, especially if it’s all the size you need.

“Energy efficient” fridges can be confusing, because although the larger models are more energy efficient, they still use more electricity, therefore they cost more money in the long term compared to the smaller, more compact models.

When enquiring about a fridge, it’s important to ask the experts to check the actual level of storage the appliance has to offer. Sometimes companies can exaggerate how much space is available, and the true amount can be significantly smaller.

If there is excess room in your fridge, it will have to work even harder to keep those areas cool, thus costing more money to keep it running.

Ratings and labels explained:

Refrigerator energy level labels can be hard to fathom, but knowing how to spot the best fridge can be crucial in buying. Since 2012, all models are either A+, A++ or A+++, but shops can still sell the older versions of stock, so an A or B rating could still turn up on your search.

The energy labels are also useful because they show the noise levels ,storage amount and also the volume of the frozen section.

How to get the best out of your fridge’s performance: 

Did you know that a fridge with the freezer situated below or above it uses 20% less energy than one with the freezer positioned beside it?  This is because air is able to move around the condenser and illuminate the hot air that is produced. Obviously.

Worth a mention if this kind of unit set up can fit in your home. Positioning your fridge/freezer away from your hot appliances (such as a cooker) means it doesn’t have to work as hard to keep cold, which means you save money on energy bills.
